Biography: Yaakov Nowogroder (1939) was born in Poland and immigrated to Israel in 1957. He started sketching on paper since childhood, always striving to translate his achievements in his own language of drawing into oil paintings. He first exhibited his works in oil in 1975, at the Rosenfeld Gallery in Tel-Aviv.
Nowogroder`s paintings can be found in art galleries, museums and private collections in Israel and abroad. Nowogroder`s pictures look at first glance like stories from a fairy-tale world. Primarily responsible for this impression are the soft shades of which his color-scale is composed and also the pictorial symbol present in every one of his works, in the form of a tree-top which shelters the objects beneath it. His color-scale is taken from the nineteenth century`s neo-romantic era, with its shades of ivory gradating, with every turn of the hand, into velvet browns and the brown-grayness of the centrally-positioned subject of the painting. The aforesaid pictorial symbol of the arching foliage of a colorful sapling is achieved by supremely delicate precision-work in which sensitive fingers have touched brush to canvas, as if the artist were to say: "I have a tale to tell". But the picture is not a fairy-tale at all, not at all a legend with which to enchant its beholders. Yaakov Nowogroder, a native of Poland, spent six years of his childhood wandering among the ruins of a terrible war, amid towns reduced to rubble, scarred human beings, lacerated landscapes and lost time. It is a known rule of literature as of art that each work contains autobiographical elements. This rule holds good for the work of Nowogroder, whose external, legendary motifs, are the attractive wrapping for the burden of harsh experiences concealed inside. His approach to art as a means of expression for his thinking, and his skill as a talented craftsman betoken a great future for Nowogroder. | |
