Biography: Efraim Zalmanovich Lesov was born in 1906 in Rogachev a small town in Russia and died in Jerusalem in 22.01.1981. In his youth he participated in Zionist activity in the former USSR and spent 3 years in prison for the attempt to cross Turkey frontier in order to reach Palestine. Later he studied in the Academy of Art in Saint-Petersburg (Leningrad at that time) in the class of the famous Russian artist Pavel Filonov. He was discharged from Academy together with Filonov. In 1931-1933 Efraim Lesov participated with other students of Filonov in the illustration of the book "Kalevala" devoted to Finnish epic and participated in the group exhibition "Analytical Art". From 1946 till 1972 he was the principal photographer of the Leningrad Ballet Theater. He was considered to be the best artist-retoucher of the former USSR at that time and participated in designing numerous books related to art, ballet and opera. Unfortunately, he was forced to leave all his paintings created till 1973 in the former USSR when he repatriated in Israel. The fate of his paintings remains unknown, since the names of people to whom he left his paintings he took with him in his grave.
Only in 1973 Efraim Lesov fulfilled his entire life dream and repatriated in Israel. Firstly, he settled in Nataniya and then in Jerusalem. He began with ecstasy painting in various genres: portraits, nature, Jewish life, religious themes, and even abstract topics. He tried to paint as much as he could, as if he felt that his time for art was very limited. The best of his works are a portrait of Lubavich Rabbi and a portrait of his art teacher Pavel Filonov. At present, this portrait is in a private collection in New York.
After repatriation to Israel Efraim Lesov participated in many solo and group exhibitions in Israel. His works can be found in many private collections in Israel, USA, Canada, Italy, Germany and Russia. | |
